POSITION OVERVIEW
The Tailings Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of several key systems within the gold mill, including conveyors, filtrate pumps, vacuum pumps, and a drum filter system. These systems work together to process tailings, discharge dry material to the tailings storage facility, and return filtrate to the mill for reuse. The operator is also responsible for manual sampling of the tailings and filtrate, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and closely collaborating with the solution operator to maintain efficient mill operations.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conveyor System Operation:
- Operate and monitor multiple conveyors that transport tailings material through various stages within the mill facility.
- Ensure conveyors are running smoothly, adjusting settings as needed, and identifying any operational issues.
- Coordinate with maintenance staff for necessary repairs or maintenance to ensure minimal downtime.
- Drum Filter System Management:
- Operate the drum filter system to separate water from the tailings slurry, producing dry material for discharge to the tailings storage area.
- Monitor the filtration process to ensure optimal performance, adjusting settings to maintain efficiency.
- Ensure proper filtration of tailings and return of filtrate to the mill, minimizing water wastage.
- Filtrate and Vacuum Pump Operation:
- Manage the operation of filtrate and vacuum pumps to support the filtration process and return water to the mill.
- Monitor pump performance and troubleshoot any issues to ensure continuous and effective operation.
- Ensure proper discharge of filtrate into the system and maintain flow rates according to mill requirements.
- Manual Sampling and Quality Control:
- Perform regular manual sampling of tailings to monitor material quality and ensure compliance with operational standards.
- Record sampling results and report any anomalies or concerns to the supervisor for further action.
- Assist in analyzing the results to help identify and resolve operational inefficiencies.
- Collaboration with Solution Operator:
- Work closely with the Solution Operator to ensure smooth coordination between tailings management and solution processing.
- Share critical information regarding filtrate and tailings characteristics to support the overall mill operation and recovery processes.
- Collaborate on troubleshooting issues that may affect both tailings and solution management systems.
- Safety and Environmental Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding the disposal and management of tailings and water recovery.
- Participate in safety drills and ensure all equipment is maintained in accordance with safety standards.
- Maintenance and Equipment Monitoring:
- Perform routine maintenance checks on tailings, filtration, and pump systems to ensure operational efficiency.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or failures to the maintenance team and assist with troubleshooting as necessary.
- Keep equipment clean and well-maintained to minimize downtime and prevent system failures.
- Reporting and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of operations, including system performance, sample results, equipment maintenance, and safety inspections.
- Document and report any issues or discrepancies to supervisors for follow-up.
- Additional Duties:
- Perform other related tasks as required to support mill operations and ensure optimal performance of the tailings management systems.
- Assist with training new employees on system operations, safety procedures, and best practices as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS– Education, Experience, Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (technical/vocational training in a related field is a plus).
- Proven experience in operating tailings, filtration, and pumping systems in a gold mill or similar industrial setting.
- Strong understanding of conveyors, vacuum pumps, filtrate pumps, and drum filter operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve minor mechanical issues with tailings and filtration equipment.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations in industrial processing environments.
- Basic knowledge of sampling techniques and quality control processes for tailings and filtrate.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, system diagrams, and operational procedures.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a focus on collaboration with other operators and maintenance teams.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This position is based in the gold mill facility, which involves exposure to noise, dust, and other industrial conditions such as being exposed to weather conditions.
- The operator will work in rotating shifts, including weekends and nights, depending on the mill’s operational schedule.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE), including hearing protection, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots, is required.
- Work may be required outside of regular hours, as per business needs;
- The physical requirements of this position include reading, walking, standing, sitting, reaching,kneeling, repetitive motions, stooping, balancing, pushing, pulling and ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
