Representatives from the Foodland Stroud and Sobeys Alcona Beach locations gave the Town of Innisfil $5,000 gift cards for their stores to support the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

Two local grocery stores are doing what they can to get food into the mouths of the people who need it most in Innisfil during the holiday season.

Earlier this week, representatives from the Foodland Stroud and Sobeys Alcona Beach locations gave the municipality $5,000 gift cards for their stores to support the Troy Scott Community Fridges.

“These generous donations will significantly impact our ability to keep the fridges stocked with fresh and healthy food,” the town said in a social-media post. “We thank them both for helping to improve our community’s food security.”

There are three Troy Scott fridges across Innisfil — outside the Innisfil Recreational Complex and the Lakeshore and Cookstown branches of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library. Everyone is welcome to take food at any time, in any quantity, as often as they require. The community fridges rely on donations from individuals, businesses and organizations.

The fridges accept donations of dairy products, Grade A eggs, dry goods, pre-packaged bread and pastries, frozen food, new personal care pantry items, and fresh, washed produce. Meals prepared in public-health inspected kitchens that are labelled with an ingredient list, the preparation location and best-before date, are also accepted.

The initiative was launched as a pilot project by the town in June 2021. It was officially renamed after Scott — who owned the Foodland and was considered a beacon of the community for his generosity and giving spirit — a few months later.
