Drag queen storytime, games 'highlight' Innisfil library Pride celebration

Lakeshore branch also hosted crafts, meet-and-greet and photo-op Saturday

Saturday afternoon saw storytellers and songs that explored themes of diversity and acceptance in honour of Pride at the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library.

Tania Grégoire, communications and event specialist at the library, said this is the fourth year they've hosted the event.

The afternoon at the Lakeshore branch consisted of a drag queen storytime and movement break, crafts, photo opportunities, and a meet-and-greet with the queens, along with a question and answer session.

Capping the event off was game time including drag queen bingo. The Barrie-Simcoe County chapter of Pflag was on site to provide information, and answer questions about how to support 2SLGBTQ+ youth.

"At our library, we take pride in offering a range of inclusive programs throughout the year, with drag queen storytime being a highlight," said library chief executive officer Erin Scuccimarri "Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is unwavering, and we strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Through collaborations with community partners, we bring engaging and educational events to Innisfil that celebrate our diverse community and give a platform to underrepresented voices.

"Events like (this) encourage meaningful conversations and provide a safe space for families and individuals to connect and learn together.”

The message drag queen Justine D’as delivered to the children and adults assembled many times was also the name of one of the books she read: "It’s OK To Be Different.”
