The inaugural Poker on the Pier tournament will be held at Friday Harbour Dec. 3.

Local philanthropists hope to help bankroll Habitat for Humanity Huronia Tuesday night.

About 60 card players of varying levels will toss in their chips at the inaugural Poker on the Pier tournament, which takes place at Dirty Oar Public House in Friday Harbour Dec. 3, starting at 7 p.m.

All proceeds from buy-backs and ticket sales go directly to Habitat to support its mission of building safe and affordable housing for families in need.

The event is organized by Barrie-based marketing and advertising firm The Creative Co-opt.

Organizers have raised about $5,000 for the charity so far.

“It seems like it’ll be a successful event,” Creative Co-opt account executive Jeanette Volkmann said. “We’re giving people the opportunity to learn how to play. The more money we can raise, the better. It should be a good evening.”

If all goes well, this will become an annual event, with proceeds supporting different groups each year.

“We work with a lot of charitable clients,” Volkmann said. “There are a lot of great organizations in our community here that we like to support. If there’s a way we can do it and have some fun, that’s awesome.”

This event will follow a Texas hold’em format.

Since this is a charity event, there won’t be cash on the line. However, the top players of the night will receive sponsored prizes.

“This exciting event offers a thrilling evening of high stakes with a purpose — helping local families in Simcoe County gain access to affordable housing,” Volkmann said. “(Habitat) has been a client of ours for a while now — they’re very near and dear to our heart. Whether you’re a seasoned poker pro or just looking for a good time for a great cause, Poker on the Pier is the perfect opportunity to combine fun and philanthropy.”

Tickets are sold out. But Volkmann encourages residents to donate to Habitat in whatever way they can, volunteer for the organization and take the time to learn about its programs and services.

“Habitat’s always there,” she said.
