NEWS RELEASE
TOWN OF INNISFIL
*************************
With Canada Day approaching, the Town of Innisfil reminds residents to be safe with the use, handling, and disposal of fireworks.
"If you choose to set off fireworks, make sure you carefully follow the label directions, have a water source handy and ensure that there is always a responsible adult present,” said Innisfil Fire Chief Jim Kay. “We urge residents to be considerate of their neighbours and respect that some individuals, children and pets can be negatively affected by excessive or inappropriate use of fireworks."
Residents can set off fireworks on Canada Day without a permit only if the fireworks meet the following conditions:
- Displayed on Canada Day, or the two days immediately before or after the holiday, between dusk and 11 p.m.
- Set off on your own property or with written permission from the property owner. Fireworks are not to be ignited on public property, including schools, streets, parks and open fields in Innisfil.
- Fallout or debris must be contained to the property of the individual discharging them.
- Not discharged within 8 metres of any building, tent, trailer, camp, shelter, fence or vehicle.
Fireworks have the potential to cause serious injury or damage to property. If you plan to display fireworks, please follow these fireworks safety tips:
- Appoint a responsible adult to handle the fireworks and carefully read and follow all instructions.
- Discharge fireworks in a safe area free of combustible materials such as trees, buildings, and dry grass.
- Ensure onlookers keep a safe distance from the area where the fireworks are being discharged.
- Keep a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water on hand in case of fire.
- Safely dispose of fireworks by soaking them in water overnight before placing in your garbage bin.
To support compliant use of fireworks and reduce nuisance impacts, the Town is looking at amending the current Fireworks By-law. The amendment will come before Council for consideration at the virtual meeting on August 11, 2021.
If you are concerned about the misuse of fireworks, report it at 705-436-3710 Ext. 5 or South Simcoe Police’s non-emergency line at 705-436-2141. Violating the Fireworks By-law can result in charges. For more details, please visit www.innisfil.ca/fireworks.
