Well-known municipal politician and businessman Jim Downer has died.

"Jim selflessly served the Midland community with pride and distinction for almost 30 years as a dedicated community leader," current Mayor Bill Gordon said.

"Jim’s service to Midland is legendary. It has been an honour and privilege to have known and worked with Jim over the years to keep Midland moving forward."

Downer served as mayor from 2007 to 2010, deputy mayor from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2006 as well as a councillor from 1995 to 2000 and then again from 2018 to now.

Gordon said more details about visitation and funeral arrangements will follow in the coming days.

"I ask that you keep Dawn and the entire Downer family in your prayers as they mourn the loss of their husband, father and grandfather," he added.

Jaz Patel, who joined council following the death of former deputy mayor Jack Contin, said Downer was a big part of Midland.

"His work and dedication will be never be forgotten," Patel said.

During a council meeting last year, Downer fell ill and had to take some time away.

But even then, he displayed his fervent devotion to serving the town. When asked to the length of his rest break, Downer was optimistic in response.

“I don’t imagine I’ll be away that long.”

He also took to social media to thank everyone for their prayers on his “road to recovery”.

“God bless you,” wrote Downer at the time. “Remember to love one another, it’s a short ride.”
