Once complete, section of road will be widened from two to four lanes, and there will be storm water enhancements and a new off-road trail linking Alcona to the Innisfil municipal campus.

Crews continue to work on a nearly two-kilometre section of Innisfil Beach Road.

It took a while for construction to restart on Innisfil Beach Road (IBR).

But now, months after the County of Simcoe hired a new contractor to complete remaining work along the nearly two-kilometre stretch of the street — officially known as County Road 21 — Town of Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin is happy with what she's witnessing.

“We are pleased to see the progress being made on the reconstruction … and to have the county invest in this critical infrastructure,” she told InnisfilToday.

The project is led by the county, in partnership with the InnServices utility.

Once complete, it will include the widening of the road from two to four lanes, storm water enhancements and a new off-road trail linking Alcona to the Innisfil municipal campus. Utility work being completed will allow Innisfil to service its new economic development land and infrastructure, supporting job creation and the regional economy, county transportation construction manager Julie Scuton said.

“The county is committed to building up our transportation infrastructure to support residents and businesses as our region continues to grow," she said. "The remaining tasks, including watermain commissioning, sanitary sewer repairs and commissioning, seed and sod placement, multi-use trail asphalt paving, surface course paving for the entire contract limits, signage installation and pavement markings, are scheduled to be substantially completed by the end of the year."

Most of the work should be completed this year, though some of it is dependent on temperature and weather, Scuton said.

Finishing touches will likely need to take place in 2024.

This year, the county is committing about $77 million toward roughly 60 roads projects throughout its jurisdiction, Scuton said.

Utility relocation on the next phase of IBR construction — Yonge to County Road 54 (10th Sideroad) — is expected to begin within months.
