It has been 200 years since the Town of Innisfil was first surveyed and opened to settlement, and the municipality had planned “a ton of different events” to mark its bicentennial.
But the COVID-19 pandemic and emergency closures have led to a ban on gatherings of more than five persons, and the cancellation of most public events.
In her update on Thursday, Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin explained that at least two bicentennial celebrations will be going ‘virtual’ – a concert featuring singer-songwriter Michael Gabriel, scheduled for next Friday, and a cake-decorating competition in June.
Michael Gabriel is already well-known to Innisfil residents from the annual Innisfil ideaLAB & Library concert series, and his performances at the Lakeshore Library. He will be helping the town celebrate its bicentennial with an online concert on May 29.
As for the cake-baking and decorating contest, that will also be online – with Mayor Dollin and local baking celebrity Beatriz Muller, certified Master Sugar Artist and owner of Cakes by Beatriz, as the judges.
“I think it’s very cruel to judge a cake just by looking at it and I don’t get to taste it, but so it is,” said Dollin, inviting residents to stay safe and celebrate Innisfil’s bicentennial at home.
Further details of both events will be announced next week.
