Paramedics and fire crews work to care for a patient after they were extricated from the vehicle following a crash Friday night at Essa Road and Burton Avenue in Barrie.

A two-vehicle crash at Essa Road and Burton Avenue on Friday night has left one person with “life-altering injuries” and another facing impaired driving charges.

“One car rear-ended the other at a high rate of speed,” Barrie Fire and Emergency Service Assistant Deputy Chief Eric MacFadden told BarrieToday, noting the impact of the crash pushed the driver’s seat into the back seat of the vehicle.

“(Crews) had to do a side-door removal to be able to get access to the patient and be able to remove them from the car," he added. "The crews were able to extricate (the person) and then hand them off to paramedics for care.”

The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, added Peter Leon, communications co-ordinator with Barrie police, telling BarrieToday one of the drivers was arrested at the scene and charged with impaired driving.

The driver of the second vehicle was taken to local hospital by ambulance with what police are saying were “life-altering injuries,” while the accused was transported to police headquarters on Fairview Drive for further investigation, he said.

Neither the driver nor the passenger of the SUV sustained any injuries.
