Man charged with murder in stabbing death in Newmarket

The accused and the victim were known to each other, police say

A 56-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a man at a building at Timothy Street and Prospect Street in Newmarket.

York Regional Police were called for a welfare check at the Founders Place on Sept. 2 at 8:50 a.m. where they found a man had been stabbed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Earlier this week, police were called to the basement of a house at 415 Simcoe St. at Main Street. The incident at the house and the incident at Founders Place are related.

"The residence on Simcoe Street is associated to the homicide investigation, however, we cannot provide any further detail beyond that as the incident is before the courts," said Const. Kevin Nebrija. "There was one homicide this week and not two."

Residents at an apartment complex at 22 Main St., located beside the house at 415 Simcoe St., noticed heavy police presence.

Philip Rulli, 56, of no fixed address, was charged with second-degree murder. The victim’s identity has yet to be confirmed by the Office of the Chief Coroner.

The accused and the victim were known to each other, police say.

Investigators are appealing to any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police and to anyone who may have security video from the area, to come forward.
