A man dressed in "military-style clothing" was arrested by Barrie police Saturday morning after a caller reported seeing him carrying a firearm.
Shortly before 11 a.m. on March 9, city police say they were notified about the incident. Additional information provided by the caller indicated the man had just boarded a city bus at the Maple Avenue transit terminal in downtown Barrie.
"Upon arrival at the terminal, a number of police units that responded began to search the buses that were taking on passengers and awaiting departure for their designated routes," police stated in a news release.
A male who fit the provided description was located on a bus and was arrested without incident after a firearm was located in a jacket, according to police. A further search by police resulted in a number of knives and blades being seized.
A 65-year-old man, of no fixed address, was transported to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued and police determined that the firearm, was a pellet-style gun.
The man has been charged with careless use of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; carrying a concealed weapon; possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
He was later released from custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on April 24, 2024.
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
