These urns were located at Barrie City Hall on Thursday, July 25. Police are trying to locate the owner.

Barrie police are attempting to locate the owner after urns were found at city hall.

Police say the urns were located Thursday by a security guard at the Collier Street building.

“We have checked our records and we don’t have any occurrences that we can locate that identify potentially a theft where urns have been taken,” Barrie police communications coordinator Peter Leon said.

“This is somebody’s loved ones. I am hoping someone will recognize the urns and are able to reach out to us (so) we can get them back to the family they rightfully belong to," he added.

As the urns do contain human remains, the Office of the Coroner is involved as well, Leon noted.

“It’s very rare. I can honestly say I have never seen anything quite like this come across where we’ve been notified someone has located (urns)," he said. "We have had, regrettably, where thefts have taken place and an urn may have been taken.

"I remember recently where there were ashes of a deceased loved one in a vehicle that was stolen, but never to the point where we’ve had two urns that were located," added Leon.

The circumstances surrounding how they got there and who they belong to, he said, are a “big mystery right now."
