Barrie police and fire investigate the scene of a crash after a car slammed into the side of a home in Barrie's north end on Sept. 27, 2024.

Two people have been arrested and charged with dangerous driving after turning a north-end Barrie neighbourhood into a street-racing zone Friday night.

Barrie police were called to the area — located just south of Grove Street — around 6:45 p.m. after one of the vehicles involved struck a home on Jeffery Street, causing “major structural damage."

The driver of the car that struck the house is a female from Bradford, confirmed Peter Leon, the police department’s communications coordinator, while the driver of the second vehicle is a male from Barrie. No ages were available.

“There was information that they were racing prior to the vehicle losing control,” said Leon, telling BarrieToday there was some form of contact between the two vehicles prior to the female driver losing control and hitting the house.

“The other vehicle ended up on the front lawn and he was able to park himself on the road afterwards," Leon added. "The other car was literally into the house. There is some major structural damage to that home that will have to be addressed.”

Given the time the crash occurred, the fact that no one nearby was injured is a big relief, Leon acknowledged.

“At that time of night, people would have been out after dinner, walking their pets or out with their children. Speed like that is beyond (being) acceptable at any time and in any community," he said.

The driver of the car that left the roadway and struck the house was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

As a result of the investigation that followed, both of the drivers have been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
