South Simcoe police put Stroud's Sunnybrae Public School in a brief hold and secure as officers investigated a “situation in the community” Friday morning.
The Simcoe County District School Board announced the security measure had been taken in a social-media post Jan. 19 at around 10 a.m.
“Students and staff are safe,” the board said. “We will provide updates as they become available.”
In an email received by InnisfilToday about 20 minutes later, police spokesperson Sue Sgambati said the hold and secure has since been lifted.
“Police are conducting an ongoing investigation,” she said. "There is no threat to public safety. Further updates when appropriate.”
Just before noon, Sgambati confirmed in a followup email a suspect has been arrested "without incident."
Hold and secure is a response to a threat or incident in the general vicinity of a school, where the doors are locked and no one is allowed to enter or leave the building.
A similar decision was made in Bradford earlier this week, while South Simcoe officers looked into an incident where a woman was seriously injured outside an apartment complex in the area of Holland Street West and Harmony Circle. In that case, Bradford District High School was placed under hold and secure, in part, because emergency personnel needed an area to land an Ornge air ambulance.
