Barrie police say a would-be robber fell into a display case, causing significant damage, during a robbery at a convenience store in the Bayfield Street area Sunday morning.

Police responded to the Glenwood Drive business, near Bayfield Street and Cundles Road, around 10:40 a.m. on Sept. 22 for a robbery in progress.

Upon arrival at the scene, police learned that a lone male had entered the store and requested assistance from the on-duty clerk.

While being assisted, police say the man ran behind the main counter and, armed with a small, edged weapon, demanded the cash register be opened.

Once opened, police say the man was unable to obtain any money and ran back into the main store area.

He then fell into a display case of glass items, which caused the fixture to fall to floor damaging the items contained within it.

The suspect is described as white man, between 40 and 45 years old, with a scruffy beard and short light hair. He was wearing a grey hoodie and blue pants.

Police say he fled by running north on Bayfield Street and then disappeared behind a nearby business.

The suspect remains at large.

Police say investigators are waiting for video surveillance from the targeted store, which they believe will assist with the ongoing investigation.

In the meantime, anyone who was in the area of the Bayfield Street and Glenwood Drive yesterday morning and may have dash-cam video or may know who the suspect is, based upon the description provided, is asked to email the investigating officer at [email protected].
