The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 11 new COVID-19 cases and one death in its July 8 update.
A Ramara man over 79 years old died on July 5 contracting COVID-19. This is the first COVID-related death reported in the municipality.
Five of the new cases are Simcoe County residents and six are from Muskoka.
There are 57 active cases in the region.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 12,316 cases of COVID-19 with 11,585 of those cases recovered and 252 cases ending in death.
There are 10 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19 related illness.
The health unit has reported a total of 4,940 variant strain cases, with 26 of those still active.
It can take several days to confirm a variant strain after a positive COVID-19 test result is reported to the health unit.
Today's update also includes the following information on variants of concern:
- 3,996 local cases have tested positive for the COVID-19 variant of concern B.1.1.7 (alpha), up by one since yesterday
- 164 cases have tested positive for the P.1 (gamma) variant of concern, no increase
- 33 cases have tested positive for the B.1.351 (beta) variant of concern, up by one since yesterday.
- 73 cases have tested positive for the B.1.617.2 (delta) variant of concern, up by three since yesterday
- 674 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing).
To date, 399,262 Simcoe-Muskoka residents (66 per cent of the population) region have received their first dose of vaccination against COVID-19, and 223,455 people (37 per cent of the population) have received two doses.
According to the health unit, 45 per cent of the region's adult population (aged 18 and over) have received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and another 32 per cent have received one dose. The remaining 24 per cent is unvaccinated.
Anyone aged 12 years or older living in Simcoe-Muskoka region can book their first or second dose of vaccine online via Ontario vaccine booking system. More appointments are added regularly for clinics throughout the region.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified).
- Barrie (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link).
- Innisfil (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
- Midland (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link).
- Penetanguishene (1): One person between 18 and 34 years old whose case is listed as community-acquired (no known link). The case was confirmed on June 20 but was not previously reported.
- There are six new cases in Muskoka including five in Bracebridge and one in Gravenhurst. All the Bracebridge cases are youth under 18 years old whose cases are linked to close contact transmission.
