The Bradford GO Station is getting a much-needed makeover, with work beginning this fall and completion expected by fall 2022.
"Bradford is such a fast-growing municipality, the need is here," said Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney. "We hear a lot about the need for expanded parking but we also want to improve accessibility and we want to improve the quality of the experience when you go through a GO Station."
Bradford GO Station project upgrades will include:
- Additional parking spaces. The parking lot will be expanding by 10 percent and equipped with LED lighting.
- A new bus platform and concrete walkways throughout the station to help improve customer access.
- Three new bus bays and bus loop
- New heated bus shelters
- An additional bus lane
- New pedestrian crossings throughout the station
- A reconfigured pickup and drop off area to accommodate local bus and regional GO bus service
The project falls under the GO Expansion program, offering more service with faster trains, supporting two-way, all-day service every 60 minutes from Bradford GO to Toronto, and every 30 minutes during rush hour.
"In York – Simcoe, we now have two major transit infrastructure projects in progress – the Bradford Bypass and improvements to the Bradford GO," said Mulroney, "Our government’s multimodal approach to transit will help to ease congestion and get people where they need to go better, faster, and easier."
The project is one of the many pieces of the downtown revitalization pie, in addition to the reconstruction of Holland Street, the revitalizing of the Bradford Community Centre, and the development of the eastern entrance to town.
"It's part of the entrance to the downtown," explained Ward 2 Coun. Jonathan Scott.
"You don't fix traffic by only one solution," said Scott, noting that the expansion of GO Transit across the province in addition to projects like the Bradford Bypass will help with traffic congestion issues.
"It all has to work together," he said.
He is excited about the work being done at the Bradford GO Station, which he says will help enhance the look of the east entrance to town.
"We're very happy that Minister Mulroney could deliver this."
The project will be put out to tender this summer, with costs to be determined. Once the contract is awarded this summer, Metrolinx will be able to provide an update on project costs.
