Bradford library to begin a new chapter with Local Author Showcase

'We would definitely like to make this an annual event to connect local authors with the community,' said library official of Sept. 21 event featuring 12 local authors

Support local authors such as Dee-Ann Benson at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library’s inaugural Author Showcase on Saturday, Sept.21, 2024, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Previously featured by InnisfilToday, Benson said she thought the Author Showcase would be a fantastic opportunity to share her two books, Grieving A Pet Family Member, Support Guide and Focus On Life’s Wonders, which features her photography and poetry.

“I am grateful to be able to share my first-hand grieving experience and support to others who have lost a dear pet family member," said Benson.

"It is a very difficult time for many individuals and I want them to know they are not alone," she said.

“I have also heard back from one purchaser that my book not only relates to pet family loss but it was indicative to loss of any relationship — grief is grief and pain is pain. Not only death but marital breakups, et cetera.”

She said she is grateful for the opportunity to share her work.

“I am grateful to the library that they are sharing their space with myself and others. It provides an opportunity to share my work; it gives me great pride as I know how hard I worked on my books," said Benson.

“This is the first time Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library has run a Local Author Showcase, but we've had a great response from local authors and are looking forward to a successful turnout on the day of the event,” said Kathryn Stark, the program development coordinator at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library

“We would definitely like to make this an annual event to connect local authors with the community. ”

Stark explained that 12 authors will be participating in the event this Saturday.

“In addition to Dee-Ann, the other authors attending are (InnisfilToday columnist) Andrew Hind, Emmanuel Karolitsky, Claudiu Murgan, Ann Clarke, Maria Kuna, Bryan Cole, Munaza Hamid, Angel Powers, Ashlea FitzWeber, S.Tonier and Arlene Adamo.”

“The rise in self-publishing has made it much easier to be a published author, but it can be difficult to promote a book without the backing of a large publisher,” Stark said. “We hope our Local Author Showcase provides an opportunity for local authors to meet readers they may not have found previously and show how incredibly talented our local writers are.”

Benson explained she has learned how important social media, networking, and reviews are in contributing to awareness of her work and book sales.

“I have gained amazing reviews on Amazon. I’m grateful for the time people take to write one. I really encourage others to write reviews, it provides a sense of assurance for those who are interested in the book,” she said.

Benson will be signing copies of her books that can be purchased in person at the Author Showcase at the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library (425 Holland St. W.) in the Zima room.
