The Innisfil Heritage Committee usually focuses on the built heritage of Innisfil, recommending historic structures to be added to the Town's Heritage registry, or granted heritage designation.
Last month the Committee also received an update from the Engineering Department on the current state of the project to restore Veteran's Memorial Park and the cenotaph in Cookstown, and proposed a new project, to refurbish the memorial, stones and garden at Belle Ewart Park.
It was committee member Deb Crawford who recommended that the Town evaluate the area of the park, to determine what needs to be done to restore the memorial and garden beds, in the Jimmi Reynolds Memorial Garden..
The committee also proposed the addition of four buildings to the Heritage Registry. Recommended to be listed, but not designated, are:
. The Lefroy Inn, at 1370 Killarney Beach Road within the village of Lefroy (built circa 1850-1860)
. Kilpatrick Store, 1341 Killarney Beach Road, a 2-and-a-half storey brick building built by Alfred Kilpatrick in the late 1800s, still used as a store today.
. ‘Roselawn,’ located at 6323 County Road 27, a 2-storey red and buff brick home that remained in the Torrance/Black family for 147 years, until sold in 2019/2020.
. The Wallace/Posius farmhouse, 1346 Belle Aire Beach Road, built circa 1850.
Listing identifies the structures as buildings of historic or architectural interest. Only if demolition is planned is there any impact on the homeowner; listing results in a 60-day delay before a demolition permit is issued, to allow town staff to look into the heritage merits of the building.
Both the recommendation to list, and to "take action" to restore and refurbish Belle Ewart Park, were approved by council on Wednesday night, along with a proposal that the town put up signage identifying the 9th Line Beach as “Bon Secours Beach Park,” in recognition of local tradition.
