Construction on County Road 4 in Bradford West Gwillimbury continues to make progress following a temporary full closure that began on October 21, 2024. This closure is essential for replacing the Scanlon Creek culvert at the intersection of County Road 4 and Line 10.
To date, the following construction milestones have been achieved:
- The excavation for the large culvert was backfilled up to approximately three feet below the top of the culvert
- Rebar was placed on top of the culvert and a concrete distribution slab was poured over the entire top of the culvert
- Riverstone was placed in the bottom of the culvert and along the embankments on either end of the culvert, and they have begun to shape the final river channel
- At the intersection of Line 9 and County Road 4 excavation has started to widen the intersection for the final lane configuration for future traffic signals
- Between Line 9 and Line 10 a cross culvert under County Road 4 was replaced with a new 1050 mm diameter concrete culvert
With construction still moving on schedule, the road is expected to reopen on December 13, 2024, as initially planned. Completing the oversized culvert removal and installation under a full road closure saved between three-to-four months of construction duration and over $1 million.
Daily traffic flagging has been introduced along 10 Sideroad and will continue throughout the closure to alleviate congestion. Additionally, signal timing at the intersection of 10 Sideroad and Line 8 has been adjusted to increase the green signal duration for southbound traffic on 10 Sideroad, reducing queuing and improving traffic flow.
Please note that Bradford Greenhouses remains open for business during the construction period and can be accessed from Line 12 or Yonge Street, south of County Road 89. Additionally, the Ultramar gas station at 2231 County Road 89 as well as Trotter’s Esso at 5479 Yonge Street in Innisfil both remain open for business.
This closure is a part of a larger reconstruction project aimed at widening County Road 4 from north of Line 8 to County Road 89. The 10-kilometre project is divided into three phases, with this being a part of the first phase. The project will widen County Road 4 from two lanes to four lanes, introduce a multi-use trail for active transportation, and enhance drainage and roadside safety. These improvements will facilitate better traffic flow and reduce future disruptions.
