NOTTAWASAGA - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) want to remind motorists that effective Jan. 1, 2016, a new law was created indicating that drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the whole pedestrian crossover until the person or persons are completely off the roadway. However, the law does not apply at crosswalks unless a school crossing guard is present.

So what is the difference between a pedestrian crossover and a crosswalk? Pedestrian crossovers are identified by specific signs, pavement markings, overhead signs and push buttons. A crosswalk is usually found at intersections with traffic signals, pedestrian signals or stop signs.

Under the law, drivers and cyclists can be fined from $150 to $500 and three demerit points for offences at pedestrian crossings and school crossings.
