The occupants of two cars suffered only minor injuries when the wheel came off a passenger van and struck their vehicles early Friday afternoon on Highway 400.
Police were called to the highway, between Mapleview Drive and Innisfil Beach Road, at 12:47 p.m.
“A southbound vehicle lost a tire and it hit oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes,” said Sgt. Sami Nasr, OPP Highway Safety Division, explaining that the wheel bounced into the opposite lane.
“It was disabled on the right shoulder southbound, which is how we were able to find it,” he said.
The van’s 47-year-old driver, from Cambridge, is charged with operating a motor vehicle with a part detached, Nasr said.
